Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
Van Morrison went a long way towards defining his wild Irish heart with his first two classic albums: the brooding, introspective Astral Weeks (1968), and the expansive, swinging Moondance. If the first was the work of a poet, its sequel was the statement of a musician and bandleader. Moondance is that rare rock album where the band has buffed the arrangements to perfection, and where the sax solos instead of the guitar. The band puts out a jazzy shuffle on "Moondance" and plays it soulful on "These Dreams of You." The album includes both Morrison's most romantic ballad ("Crazy Love") and his most haunting ("Into the Mystic"). "And It Stoned Me" rolled off Morrison's tongue like a favorite fable, while "Caravan" told a tale full of emotional intrigue. Moondance stood out in the rock world of 1970 like a grownup in a kiddie matinee. --John Milward

Album Description
Pressed on 180gram vinyl at RTI. Mastered from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Grey at Acoustech Mastering. Features all original packaging. Highlights include 'Caravan', 'Into The Mystic' and 'Moondance'. Van Morrison's 1970's follow up album to Astral Weeks titled Moondance was every bit as brilliant; buoyant and optimistic where Astral Weeks had been dark and anguished it cracked the Top 40 and generated classic hits.

5 out of 5 stars I WANNA ROCK YOUR GYPSY SOUL.....   October 14, 2009

It's been a long time since I owned MOONDANCE. There has been some debate on which is Van Morrisons best album. Come on. This is it.

I just got the new print on vinyl and it is hella nice. Opening right off with its smooth, somewhat surreal but innocent AND IT STONED ME. We used to cover that bit at the Yardrock back in the day. Every song is just as good as the one it's next to on this album,,, theres no "this ones brilliant," or "he's such a genius," on this one folks. Just ten solid tracks that bring it home. And nothing can match the singability... CARAVAN, INTO THE MYSTIC, GREETINGS FROM NEW YORK... even CRAZY LOVE... eventually they will all win you over.

Only plan on buying one VAN MORRISON album? MOONDANCE. absolutely (...on vinyl!)

I ordered the Rhino Records reissue (vinyl) as mentioned on the listing but instead Amazon sent me an old Warner Bros LP. What gives??

this is in regards to the remastered version of this classic album/cd. i have a huge music and film collection and i add to my collection all the time so i know what i'm talking about. first thing is whoever the clown is who runs warner bros. corp. he is a money grubbing shortsighted music and movie fan screwing jerk!!! the fact that this cd by one of the most important artist of the past 40 years along with several other van morrison cds have been remastered and are only available in japan...........yeah that's right i said japan?.... you know a couple of years ago i bought the warner bros. 2 disc edition of 'that's the way it is' elvis presley las vegas concert dvd. the only thing was the 2nd disc was all grainy looking and the sound was in mono?..... yep, pretty funny uh? ha! ha! he! he! that was a pretty good trick. i'm still pissed about that. about 10 years ago i bought a warner bros. rod stewart best of or greatest hits of or ? cd and the sound was so bad i threw it away. then over the past couple of years i've also bought a few older movies and yeah the video and sound quality was terrible! who released them?.......would you believe warner bros.? it seems that under the current warner bros. regime their only consideration is how they can rip off the american music and movie buying public for a fast easy cheap buck!!!....... i want to warn everyone when you think about buying a warner bros. product beware! i only bought this remastered van morrison cd because i needed it for my collection, but thats it. no more warner bros. products for me, i'm tired of being taken advantage of. when i get screwed i like to take off my pants and i like to enjoy it?.....back to this classic van morrison remastered cd/album 'moondance', i have to say it sounds incredible! deep crystal clear sound! that doesn't negate the fact that i spent $38.00 to purchase this cd in japan online and have it internationally air mailed to my home..........update 6/15/09 i've learned warner bros. has released a remastered version of neil young's 'harvest' album/cd in japan? yeah that's right japan again? with no plans to release it here in the states? neil young who has been for the past 45 years and who continues to be a huge influence on american music and our culture. neil young who came to this country from canada to make it here in the music business, and who has lived, recorded and toured here ever since and yet his album/cd 'harvest' which is arguably his greatest work isn't available here in it's best form? .............shame!

5 out of 5 stars The purest and deepest music of the soul   November 23, 2008

Van Morrison's 1970 album "Moondance" has always been acclaimed as one of the best albums in the history of rock music. Whilst of itself that distinction means little to me, in the case of "Moondance" there can hardly be a more fitting description for what stands as the most remarkable example of the blending of dense, funky rhythms to pastoral folk music settings.

All through "Moondance", Van Morrison's deep mystical sense, inherited from living in the rich, fertile "Emerald Isle", stands strong in a manner that grips a listener forever after a single serious listen. The upfront vocal of the simple, dreamy opener "And It Stoned Me" might be soft in tone, but it sure packs both a punch and the ability to create the most evocative sort of imagery you will find in music history. The title track is one of the greatest moments in the history of music: the soulful rhythm and Morrison's warm, soulful voice combine with a now-fabled theme of the coming of autumn in the British Isles and the backing of powerfully blown flute and saxophone to create a song that is emotionally explosive in its intensity even if it never announces the slightest desire to be. The way in which Van Morrison sings - making the lyrics sound less poetic than they are - only adds to the mystery of an amazing piece of music.

"Crazy Love" and "Into the Mystic" have a simple, truly transcendent beauty in which Van's voice can at times seem totally rigid, yet manages to convey the sweetest emotion better than a huge number of bad imitations (some of which, like Joe Cocker, were already active when "Moondance" came out). "Caravan" may lack the intense drumming, but still the wordless chorus is a perfect complement to the verses of praise to radio - out of place, maybe, in 2008, but still impressive historically.

"Come Running" returns to the simple, funky beat of the title tune to almost equal effect, whilst the harpsichord and flute turn the underrated penultimate track "Everyone" into an amazing singalong anthem. The gospel-based "Brand New Day" is the most mysterious song here: a tale of redemption that nobody has repeated.

With is earthy, mystical lyrics, simple arrangements, and fiery, passionate vocals, "Moondance" created a fusion of folk-rock and soulful vocals that many have been influenced by but none have come near replicating. There is a reason why so many critics rate this as one of the best recordings ever made, and you too will understand for sure if you listen.
