5 out of 5 stars Take a trip with a fantastic songwriter.   April 22, 2003
I have a lot of music DVD/videos, which include legendary songwriters like Jackson Browne, James Taylor & Neil Young, this DVD is by far the BEST! Ellis is one of the top songwriters of the new millenium. His powerful voice and excellent guitar playing are only second to his storytelling abilities. Whether it is the story about the song or the story within his songs, Ellis is a masterful musician and storyteller. Highly recommended!!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but technically...   April 19, 2003

I have mixed emotions about this dvd. Ellis Paul, in concert and giving guitar instruction, was excellent, even though for certain songs in the concert, the guitar sounded really out of tune, and I wish that the concert itself was longer. The interview was pretty good... felt a little awkward, as though they were trying to fill time. The road trip was ok... The main problem I have with this dvd is that it felt like it was "amature" day when it came to the technical quality of the dvd. The frequent camera changes durring the concert left one feeling a little dizzy at times. The audio level from one feature to the next were not the same, so one needs to be constantly adjusting the audio level as one plays the dvd. Very annoying when you have the volume up loud for a long section of the dvd, then it returns to the menu, and the introductory song blasts through the speakers... But for $20, especially when Ellis doesn't tour in a town near you, I recommened purchasing this dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Seize the DVD! Up close and personal with Ellis Paul.   April 19, 2003

Six is the first perfect number according to the Greek Math nerds so I'll actually give this one 6 stars.
Words are better when they're written down--so here goes:
I have seen Ellis in concert many times, had lessons with him at a camp in Alaska, listened at a friends house (hi Mark and Cindy Eubank) as he played to me the prototype of "The world ain't slowing down" (thanks for the Karma reference Ellis!) The traveling I have done to see the best and see if any of the genius might rub off on my own mortal attempts at songwriting! Well you too can have it all with this DVD---it gives you EP-lessons and interviews (with E, Chris Williams and Vance Gilbert) and a concert (with and without commentary by E and his manager) plus a documentary of what it's like to be a professional songwriter on the road (the latter is somewhat like a home movie but the rest of he DVD is wonderful in style and presentation). Heck, if he didn't keep churning out those new songs you might only need the DVD.
Do yourself a favor--- buy some art---isn't that what we live for?
Love and Peace
Your Uncle Deev
